What happens if I pass my test?

You will be given a Pass Notification Letter. You'll need this for your application to UKBA for Citizenship or Settlement. Please keep this in a safe place because we can't give you another copy of this letter. If you lose your results letter please contact the Home Office.

What happens I do not pass my test?

The test supervisor will let you know if you haven't passed.

Please don't make an application for naturalisation as a British citizen or for indefinite leave to remain if this happens. You may, however, need to regularise your stay by applying for further leave to remain if it has expired or is close to expiring.

Your results notification letter will give you feedback on which areas of the handbook you need to look at again. You should read the handbook and do the exercises in Prepare for the Test on this website, until you feel confident.

You will then need to book a new test time and day by logging into your Life in the UK account. You can take the test as many times as you need but the earliest you can book and pay for you next test is seven days from today.

If you think you did not pass because of your level of English, you may like to consider attending a combined English Language (ESOL) and citizenship class at your local college. You would do this instead of taking the test again.

The name on my certificate is wrong. What shall I do?

The name printed on your certificate is the same as the name you told us when you registered for a Life in the UK account. The test supervisor can not change this for you.

If the details on the certificate are wrong, you should include a letter with your application for naturalisation as a British citizen or for indefinite leave to remain explaining what the situation is. The Home Office will then make a decision whether or not to accept your certificate.

How long is my certificate valid for?

Your Life in the UK Test Certificate does not have an expiry date on it. You should therefore keep it in a safe place until you are ready to submit the original with your application for Citizenship or Settlement.

We are not able to provide you with further copies of your test certificate. If you lose it, you should contact the Home Office who may ask you to take your test again.

You cancelled my test because there was a problem at the test centre or because of a problem with the booking system. What do I do?

Unfortunately, we are sometimes unable to let you take your test when you arrive due to technical difficulties or circumstances beyond our control. If this happens, the Test Centre staff will provide you with details of why you are unable to take your test. We will then contact you as soon as possible in order to arrange another time for you to take your test, without you having to pay again. Alternatively, we can arrange for a refund to be made to the card with which the test was booked.

If we arrange another test session for you, it is very important that you confirm this booking. To do this, you will need to log into your Life in the UK Test account, click on Book a Test from the left-hand menu and then either confirm or reject the test session we have set up for you. If you do not do this before the day of your test, there won''t be a test waiting for you on the day of your test.

Unfortunately, we are unable to reimburse candidates for expenses incurred in these circumstances. For more information, please refer to the terms and conditions section.
